The Red Queen series – Review

Hey guys! So I recently started getting into YA novels, and one of the first series I read was the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. Today I’ll giving you my review about the books and telling you if its worth reading them.

The book series itself has 4 books: Red Queen, Glass sword, King’s Cage and War Storm. However there also 2 novellas telling the stories of other characters, these are Queen song and Steel scars. There is also a 5th book called the Broken throne which features the already mentioned Novellas, 2 new novellas and other smaller stories, maps and such. It isn’t an typical novel, however it features everyone’s favorite characters and acts as an extended epilogue for the series.

So firstly a quick summary of the first book (Thanks Imdb): “The poverty stricken Reds are commoners, living under the rule of the Silvers, elite warriors with god-like powers. To Mare Barrow, a 17-year-old Red girl from The Stilts, it looks like nothing will ever change. Mare finds herself working in the Silver Palace, at the centre of those she hates the most. She quickly discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy Silver control. But power is a dangerous game. And in this world divided by blood, who will win?”

Now I personally really enjoyed the series even though I admit that the first book had some very predictable ideas and tropes. That being said the series does get better. The first book has very conflicted reviews since most people think that it’s basically a mash up of previous YA novels and they aren’t wrong. The first book in my opinion is not the best book of the series and the rest of the series fare better and are more original in terms of tropes and ideas in the YA genre.

Most people find the books repetitive and a little too boring for their taste. One of their biggest complaints is that Mare, our heroine is very arrogant, self-centered and doesn’t care about the consequences of her actions, yet people around her seem to praise her for strength and bravery. I think that to some extent that is true however the books do sort of address this although I’ll admit not in much detail. It is true that most people end up not liking the main characters because of this idea of “I am the saviour”. I have to say that I enjoyed mare’s character as flawed as it was. I think it gave us this view that she looks at herself from rose tinted glasses but as the series progresses she realises how wrong she is and that no one is perfect and no can be perfect. I think it adds to the character arc and tells people that she can own up to her past and what she’s done to get to the place she is.

I am a sucker for some of the tropes present in the book, such as a love triangles and the dystopian world. Obviously these are personal opinions and make the book more enjoyable for me. I’ve notices that a lot of people stopped reading the series after the 1st or 2nd book because they couldn’t go on however I felt like the 3rd and 4th books were the best ones. They gave a better view in the world and that’s also where the point of views change, so you’re able to see through other character’s points of views which adds a little bit more to the story.

I liked how the series didn’t have a happily ever after like most books tend to have instead it gave you time to think about it. I also liked the way it dealt with grief even though it was lacking in the first 2 books, I think it showed how Mare was thinking about what she was doing and how her actions had hurt the people around her, it also dealt with losing people and constantly feeling the burden of their deaths on you. The books also dealt with the importance of family, as Mare fails to acknowledge her family at the start however gradually realises that they’re the people still there for her, after all she’s done and gone through.

The series itself is very conflicted with some people loving it while others not so much. I personally like the series and feel like they were worth my time. I did feel that it could’ve been better however we have to do make do with what we have. I think if you’re a fan of well known YA tropes, dystopia and Fantasy then you might enjoy this series.

Thank you for reading. Tell me what you think of the series and whether you enjoyed it or not? Don’t forget to like, comment and share.
