How to Tie-dye a shirt

Tie-dye shirts and merch can be really expensive and you can make them yourself. So today I thought why not teach you guys how to do tie-dye. This way is easy and you can easily make them because you don’t need a tie-dye kit to them, you can find everything at home. Have fun

Things that you are going to need are:

  1. Food colouring of your choice (I used red, blue, green and yellow)
  2. A white shirt or any white thing you want to tie-dye
  3. Squirt bottles ( I used cleaned and empty squeeze honey bottles
  4. Water
  5. Vinegar
  6. Small bucket

First, you need to fill the bucket water and vinegar in equal parts and then soak your shirt in it for about 10 – 15 minutes

Then take out the shirt and dry it, either in a dryer or leave it to air dry.

After the shirt has done drying, lay it down on a straight surface or in your bathtub because the colour might seep and ruin the floor or carpeting. I did it in the bathtub.

Now prepare the Tie-dye, put some food colouring the bottles and then put some water in them. Caution don’t fill them to the top just a little bit.

These are my bottles which I filled with a little bit water and food colouring. You can make the colours as light and as dark as you want.

Now pinch the shirt in the middle with both fingers and twist it to form a round shape and then secure it with rubber bands to make small triangle wedges.tie.jpg

Something like this: ( Mine is already coloured because I took this picture after doing the tie-dye)

Now using your colours, colour each wedge a different colour but also make sure that the colours overlap each other to give the rainbow effect.

After colouring, leave the shirt to dry overnight or for 7-8 hours. Afte that remove the rubber bands and wash it to remove the dye from it.

Then wash it in the machine according to how to clean your shirt and also use less detergent.

After the wash, dry it and after it has dried you can rock your shirt where ever you go.

This is how mine turned out. If yours doesn’t turn out like that or is ruined email me or write it down in the comments below. So I can tell you what you did wrong or If I did something wrong.

Have fun creating your very own tie-dye shirt.
